Champollion, the Egyptian

Be part of a historical key moment!

Seven years after having pierced the mystery of the hieroglyphs, Jean-François Champollion enters the temple of Abu Simbel. After a four-month expedition, he can finally meet with the great Ramses II. He feels a mixture of passion, excitement, and anxiety: what if his deciphering system isn’t fully functional?

Upon his exit, he can finally state: “I have the right to announce that there is nothing to amend in our letter on the hieroglyphic alphabet… Our alphabet is correct”.

With this virtual reality experience, you will slip into Champollion’s skin to relive this unique intimate experience and this historical milestone. Lit by torchlight, guided by Champollion’s voice, the visitor-explorer enters the temple, recreated from David Roberts’ watercolors. Step by step, they discover its masterpieces, from the gigantic bas-relief of the battle of Qadesh to the sculptures of Ramses II and the gods Ra-Harakhty, Amun-Ra, and Pta…

This is a unique opportunity to explore the heart of an exceptional Egyptian site!

A virtual reality experience co-produced with the Louvre Museum and the Louvre-Lens.
