A Virtual Reality film directed by Nicolas Champeaux and Gilles Porte.
Illustrations by artist Oerd Van Cuijlenborg immerse viewers in the original trial hearings, until recently inaccessible, digitized in partnership with INA in 2016. Thanks to 360° virtual reality and spatialized sound, the viewer is up close to the protagonists and fully immersed in the proceedings. The defendants will turn their 9-month hearing into a political platform against apartheid. Defending themselves and seeking an acquittal or a light sentence are not priorities for them. They wanted to take advantage of the presence of international journalists and diplomats to denounce the immorality of the segregationist regime. As Nelson Mandela said from the podium, "It's an ideal I'm prepared to die for".
Through a subjective, immersive experience, this VR film recreates the violent exchanges between Walter Sisulu, a leading ANC member and Mandela's mentor, and his aggressive, racist prosecutor Percy Yutar.
